You can recycle
those grass clippings and other yard waste and enrich your garden at the
same time - by composting! Composting is the decomposition of plant
materials and other once-living substances to make a dark, earthy
substance that's excellent for adding to houseplants and enriching
garden soil.
You can use not
only grass clippings, but also kitchen waste, such as fruit and
vegetable peels, coffee grounds and egg shells. There area also
substances you shouldn't compost, including meat, bones, and pet waste.
Some people
compost using bins have purchased or that they have made themselves from
recycled pallets or 2x4's and plywood. Others don't use bins; instead,
they create a compost pile at a convenient spot on the ground.
Composting is not
a new idea, but one that is gaining popularity once again. Not only can
you enrich your garden soil and therefore, build up and beautify your
garden area, but by composting you will reduce the amount of garbage
sent to the landfill, thereby benefiting the environment and your
community.
