| If you
live in a place with little yard space, such as an apartment, or if
you'd like to try gardening but don't feel comfortable planting a large
area or are concerned about late and early frosts, then container
gardening could be for you!
Using
containers, such as planters or even cloth grocery bags, you can raise
great vegetables, from lettuce and tomatoes to peppers and green
beans. Even some fruits can be raised in containers, such as
strawberries and raspberries.
Planter
boxes, wooden barrels, and large flowerpots are just a few of the
containers you can use - you're only limited by your own imagination!
Some people have even used plastic lunch bags to plant lettuce (CLICK
HERE to learn more on that one!)
Keep
in mind that wooden containers are susceptible to rotting and that cheap
plastic pots may deteriorate in sunlight. Redwood or cedar boxes and
ceramic, glazed pots are better choices. And, make sure your container
has adequate drainage.
Growing
your own vegetables is a healthy past time: you know where that tomato
or pepper has come from and what, if any, pesticides, have been used to
help it grow. Having a vegetable garden is also a fun family activity,
and container gardening is a great way to raise your own food without
taking up a lot of space. Also, if a cold night comes along (which can
readily happen nearly any month of the year in our state!), it's easy to
bring those plants inside and keep them warm and growing!
