Deep Watering
Deep Watering
We're fortunate to be enjoying a splendor of warm autumn weather.  So, speaking of trees as we did in the article above, this "Indian summer" allows us a great opportunity to conduct deep watering of all our perennial plants especially trees and shrubs. Deep watering will recharge the subsoil moisture and help the plants over-winter.

Most of our survival problems are associated with dry soils and our plants drying out over the winter, especially evergreens. Remember that all plants use water all winter long, even though it's a small amount compared to the growing season. You can water until the ground freezes up.  Also, if we have a warm period this winter and the ground is not frozen, drag out those hoses and water those perennials. When deep watering I am talking about watering so the soil is wet down to 12 to 18 inches deep.

If you follow this advice for fall and winter watering, your trees and shrubs will thank you next year.
