Today I want to talk about calculating the amount of fertilizer to use.
The first step is to
measure each section of the yard. Say the front yard is 25 feet by 40
feet, which is 1000 square feet. On fertilizer there is a series of
numbers listed usually something like 19-9-9, which translates to 19
percent nitrogen, 9 percent phosphorus, 9 percent potash. These numbers
are always in percentage and listed in the order nitrogen (N),
phosphorus (P), potash (K) any trace elements will be listed next. Most
recommendations call for one pound or less of actual nitrogen per 1000
square feet.
With a 40-pound bag
of 19-9-9, you would divide one pound by 19 percent to get 5.25 pounds
of fertilizer out of the bag to cover 1000 square feet. Therefore, the
40-pound bag will cover approximately 7600 square feet
(40/5.25=7.61x1000).
I hope that with a little bit of math you will apply fertilizer more efficiently.
