Do you want to cut down on the
rodent population in your area? If so, put out the welcome mat for the
Great Horned Owl.
The Great Horned Owl is a year-round resident in this part of the
country. Farms are perfect habitats; large trees offer shelter, and
waste grains and hay attract lots of mice, rabbits, pigeons and skunks,
which owls prey upon.
Great Horned Owls mate for life but stay together only during the
nesting season. Nesting for owls is early in the year while snow still
covers the ground. They do not make their own nests, preferring to use
an old building or a nest made by other creatures. The series of three
to eight hoots is the most recognizable call in the night for many of
us.
