Planning Your Mulch
Tree Mulch
Tree Mulch

Mulching with organic matter around trees, shrubs, and other plantings can benefit your landscape in a variety of ways. Mulches will help conserve moisture and maintain uniform soil temperature by insulating the soil. It can help reduce soil erosion, act as a barrier against weeds and add beauty to the appearance of the plantings.

Mulch should be applied around a tree to a depth of about four inches. Keep it back away from the trunk about 6 inches to insure the tree has the opportunity for proper air exchange. Wood chips are the best type of mulching material to use around trees and shrubs. Compost, leaves, sphagnum peat, and grass clippings are other sources of mulch.

So, as you plan for your spring landscaping this year, plan to mulch those trees and shrubs!
