As
soon as the snow is gone, you'll want to do all you can to get your lawn
ready for a healthy growing season.
If you plan to use a power rake, wait until the ground dries out, and be
kind to your lawn. Don't set the tines so deeply that they scrape the
surface of the soil. By scraping the soil, you are creating a planting
bed for weeds, especially dandelions.
Also, since grasses
begin growth at the soil surface, power raking too deeply cuts the
growing point to shreds. This stresses the lawn before it even has a
chance to grow. Set the tines so they pick up leaf matter and thatch
without scraping the soil surface.
March is too early to fertilize lawns; wait until the middle or end of
May when the grasses are still actively growing but are just starting to
slow down their pace. If you fertilize too soon this spring, you'll
wear yourself out mowing every other day!
