| Starting Plants Indoors |
|
| I was
at the store the other day and saw that the spring planting supplies
were already on display! I was really tempted to get a few things, but
decided to wait another month or two and then stock up. Fortunately, it
won't be long before we'll be starting our vegetable seeds indoors in
preparation for the outdoor gardening season.
Vegetables grown for transplants include tomatoes, peppers, cabbage,
cauliflower, broccoli, cucumbers and many others. Transplants need to
be seeded, grown and then hardened off before setting them out. This
can be anywhere from three weeks for cucumbers, six weeks for tomatoes,
and six to seven weeks for cauliflower.
Most homeowners will find maintaining proper conditions for transplant
production in the home to be difficult. A green house is the way to go
if you are thinking of growing your own plants on a large scale. Yet,
if you want to start a few plants or are considering raising herbs,
they can be planted inside and will grow, with proper care, in a room
with south-facing windows.
Proper light intensity, fertility of the soil medium, watering, proper
growing temperatures and other factors must be considered when setting
up to grow your own transplants.
