Switch Grasses

Let's visit about one of the easiest care plant families for the landscape, in fact they are so easy to care for they are considered zucchini plants because like zucchini, if you plant it you will have squash! I'm referring to ornamental grasses.

Just like our own prairies, these grasses thrive under very harsh conditions.  I'm partial to the Switch grasses! Consider 'Shenandoah' Switch Grass ( Panicum virgatum v. 'Shenandoah'), new growth emerges green with ends tipped in red. In summer, reddish pink seed heads form above reddish foliage and in autumn the foliage turns a dark black purple.  This selection is striking topping out at 3 feet!

Another is 'Prairie Sky' Switch grass (Panicum virgatum v 'Prairie Sky) its foliage is bluish with pink seed heads and a mature height of 5 feet.  This one can serve as windbreak specimen in the flower bed. So take a look at grasses and in particular the switch grasses.
