What Causes the Tree Sap Dripping? Aphids!

Is tree sap dripping on your car or sidewalk? This is likely due to aphids feeding on the leaves of your tree. Tree infestations of these soft bodied insects have been quite heavy this year. This insect generally feeds on the underside of the leaf and is hard to detect at first glance. The insect secrets “honey-dew” which is the sticky substance that drips off of the tree.

Will this kill the tree? This is most likely not to happen. However, the infestation reduces the vim and vigor of the tree which makes it harder to survive one of those tough winters that come along. It can also cause premature leaf drop and reduce the aesthetic value of your tree. Spraying the tree with an approved insecticide such as Malathion will help control this particualr insect.
