Vegetable Garden Planning
Planning Your Garden
What size garden do you need to adequately feed your family? The answer depends on the number of family members you have, and what vegetables each person prefers.

In general, per person, plan on growing 2 to 4 cabbage, cauliflower, cucumber, melon, squash and tomato plants. For pea lovers, allow 12 feet of row per person. With beans, red beets, carrots, kale, lettuce, mustard, onions, swiss chard, and turnips, consider planting 6 feet of row per person.

For broccoli and peppers, 6 plants per person should be about right. For potatoes and sweet corn, allow 25 feet of row per person, if space allows.

If you love to can or freeze your produce, or share your harvest with extended family and neighbors, take this into consideration when you're planning your garden.
