When To Plant

Today, I want to visit about spring planting succession or when we can typically plant our vegetables. This depends on the type of vegetable. With broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, onions, peas, potatoes, radishes, spinach and turnips, we would want to get that seed, set or tuber in the ground about 4 weeks before the date of the average last frost. Know red beets, carrots, mustard, parsnips, swiss chard and sweet corn should be planted about two weeks ahead of the last expected frost for your area.
Frost sensitive vegetables like eggplant, peppers, sweet potatoes, beans, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, and melons should be planted a week or more after the date of average last frost. You can check with your local Extension Office for average frost free dates.
